A disappointing performance against a tidy Winward side saw Woodhurst crash out of the Essex Cup at Parmiters.
|
The 'Hurst never really produced what they are capable of and only in rare spells looked likely to threaten the visitors who were well-drilled and mobile.
Two early goals, which can largely go down as defensive errors, put Winward in a commanding position. Woodhurst did look lively when they did manage to get the ball down a play, and when Jan Souleyman was given opportunity to attack, it looked like the home side might find some sort of response.
Midway through the first half they did pull one back, and began to ask questions of the Forest and District outfit. It was a quickly taken free-kick from Steve Hughes on the right which allowed Souleyman space to go at the Winward defence. He found room to drill in a low cross, which was met by the right boot of Jamie Bradbury who guided powerfully inside the post.
The 'Hurst were back in the game, but a one goal deficit soon became two again when the Winward skipper pulled a rabbit out of the hat chipping in a deft lob from 20 yards.
3-1 at the break made a mountain to climb for Woodhurst, and when another lack of communication inside the box set up Winward for their fourth, the game was put out of reach. The Essex Cup is over for Woodhurst for another season.
