Thameside Trophy Quarter-Final

Attendance:

Basildon's run of six games without defeat ended as a first-half Ilford goal sees the Ryman Division Two side through to the Semi-Final of this year's Thameside Trophy.

Ilford had the better of the first half and got their noses in front early on. The game's only goal came in the 12th min when Chris Tedder got on the end of Peter Truman's well-taken free kick to divert past Dean Neil.

Basildon worked hard to create an opportunity to draw level themselves, but just lacked the final piece of magic. Max Shepherd's shot over the bar and Laverne Menga's tame left-foot strike, both from outside the box, were the best they could manage.

Minutes before the break the referee thought that Lee Forbe's sliding tackle inside the box was good enough for a penalty, simply because Ilford's Jason Powell was hit the floor, but Dave Reilly's weakly-struck penalty was easily saved by Neil.

The second half will mainly be remembered for its physical aspects, numerous high-pitched Ilford appeals and the yellow cards dished out in abundance (10 in total).

And with the penalty miss giving the home side confidence, Basildon battled strong and began to stamp their own mark on proceedings.

Former Ilford man Adrian Smith looked certain to score inside the visitor's box. But after receiving the ball from Terry Merchant's free-kick on the right, which was helped into the area by Jamie Bradbury's flick, the surface thwarted his attempt as much as the defence and he was unable to find space to pull the trigger.

Ilford should have put the game beyond doubt, though, when, with two thirds of the gone, a one-two in the box Bradley Jones also suffered from the tacky ground, getting the ball stuck between his feet with an open goal in front of him.

Basildon then through caution to the wind and went all out for a leveller. It was backs to the wall for Ilford in the last 15 minutes and when Forbes got on the end of Billy Thompson's cross six yards out his header looked destined for the net. However, the Bees faithful could only watch as the ball floated just wide of the upright.

Despite the defeat, Basildon can take a lot form the game. It's only their second defeat of 2005, and both 1-0 reversals came from a moment's lack of concentration. A return to league action at eton manor on Saturday will hopefully see a return to winning ways for John Doyle's men.
