Essex Sunday Junior Cup Round One

Referee: Ian Robb

Woodhurst progressed to the second round of the Essex Sunday Junior Cup after a well-deserved win in a blustery Valentines Park.

It was a journey into the unknown as the Hurst faced Collier Row Seniors and despite trailing at half-time, the Hurst domination finally told as strikes from 'Geordie' Steve Hughes, Andrew Sheppard and Kofi Owusu set up a home time with for Independent Sunday League rivals Drofmor.

Lawley's men started slowly. Jamie Bradbury was called into replace the missing Tom Gray late on, and kept Woodhurst on terms with a fine early stop from point blank range. For a striker, he's not a bad 'keeper at all. However, he was caught out after only 15 minutes when a high ball was helped on to the box by the strong wind and the Collier Row forward was there to send it over Bradbury's head into the net. But that was pretty much it as far as the home sides attacks came.

Woodhurst played some great football, and at times gave the Collier Row defence a lot to consider. But the goal never materialised despite efforts from Paul McShea, Patrick Ladbury, Nigel Jordon and Sheppard coming close.

It was all change after the break, though, as the now wind-assisted 'Hurst looked to respond. A well-thought free-kick pulled them level. Jimmy Woodham laid off to Hughes and a wicked deflection sent the northerner's shot into the net.

Row did have a couple of breaks and once broke the offside trap, but another fine one-on-one save from Bradbury kept them at bay.

Then Sheppard put Woodhurst 2-1 up with some neat footwork inside the box. He shot was equally as cute and the keeper was left to collect the ball from the net.

Nigel Jordon almost came close with a great effort after beating teh Collier ROw defender to the ball, but his tight-angle shot struck the bar.

But with only five minute left Owusu grabbed the third and his fourth of the season to secure victory. Having just scuffed a sitter, Kofi was heading for some stick, but when he was unleashed for a second time, his powerful, low shot rippled the net and Woodhurst were home and dry.
